VERVE lifting platform and rack for athlete strength and conditioning

What Equipment Do I Need for a Strength and Conditioning Gym for Athletes?

What Equipment Do I Need for a Strength and Conditioning Gym for Athletes?

The short answer

An athlete strength and conditioning gym is built around lifting stations. Each station needs a rack or half rack, a lifting platform, an Olympic barbell, a set of bumper plates and an adjustable bench. Around those stations you add a GHD for posterior chain work, plyo boxes for jumping, and an air bike, rower, sled and kettlebells for conditioning, all on 15mm rubber flooring. Work out how many stations you need from your largest training group, then fill the rest of the floor with conditioning and accessory work.

What equipment do I need for a strength and conditioning gym for athletes?

Athletes train for speed, power and resilience, not just bigger numbers on a bench. That shapes the equipment list. You need gear that handles Olympic lifts and repeated drops, lets a coach run groups through quickly, and covers jumping and conditioning in the same room.

The list breaks into six parts:

  • Core lifting stations: rack or half rack, platform, Olympic barbell, bumper plates, bench.
  • Posterior chain and accessory: a GHD.
  • Power and plyometrics: plyo boxes at 20, 24 and 30 inches.
  • Conditioning: air bike, rower, sled and kettlebells.
  • Flooring: 15mm rubber across the whole training area.
  • Layout: enough stations for your biggest group.

The core lifting station

Every athlete S&C program runs through the barbell. Squats, deadlifts, presses, cleans and snatches all happen at the station, so this is where most of the budget should go.

Rack or half rack

For team training, a half rack is usually the better fit. The open front lets athletes step in and out quickly between sets, and a coach can see every lifter from the side. The VERVE Commercial Half Rack at $999 is built from 3mm steel on 75mm x 75mm uprights with laser cut Westside hole spacing, and measures 1240mm wide by 1650mm deep by 2300mm high. Westside spacing gives you fine adjustment of J-hooks and safeties, which matters when athletes of very different heights share a rack.

If you prefer a full four post cage for heavy solo squatting, the VERVE Zen Power Rack uses the same 3mm steel and 75mm x 75mm uprights in a 1334mm by 1164mm footprint.

Olympic barbell and bumper plates

Each station needs its own 20kg bar and enough plates to load it for your strongest athlete. Bumpers are the default for athletes because cleans, snatches and jerks get dropped. VERVE BE> Olympic Bumper Plates start from $105 . Every plate is the IWF standard 450mm diameter, so the bar sits at the same height off the floor whatever the load, and the stainless steel inserts fit tightly on Olympic bars. Bar choice is covered in its own section below.

Bench

Athletes need flat, incline and decline positions for pressing and accessory rows. The VERVE Commercial FID Bench V2 at $599 has seven back pad positions from 15 degrees decline to 80 degrees upright and four seat positions, on a powder coated 3mm steel frame rated to 400kg. It measures 1525mm by 610mm by 447mm, so it slides in and out of a half rack without crowding the station.

Why platforms matter for Olympic lifts and drops

Olympic lifts finish with the bar coming back down. A missed snatch or a dropped clean sends a loaded bar to the floor from shoulder height or higher. A platform does three jobs:

  • Protects the slab and the gear. The platform takes the impact so your concrete, bar and plates are not absorbing it directly every session.
  • Gives a consistent surface. Athletes pull and catch on the same flat, stable surface every rep, which helps technique.
  • Marks the lifting zone. A defined platform tells everyone else in the room where not to walk while a lift is happening.

The VERVE Weight Lifting Platform at $1,649 is designed for powerlifting and Olympic lifting and built to handle heavy impacts. If you already own racks, the VERVE Power Rack Weightlifting Platform is a bamboo platform that bolts to an existing rack, measuring 2800mm by 2500mm and sitting 30mm off the floor.

Bar choice: Elite Olympic Barbell vs Power Barbell

Most athlete programs include both Olympic lifts and the big three, so the question is which bar to buy first and whether to add a second.

Feature VERVE Elite Olympic Barbell VERVE Power Barbell
Weight 20kg 20kg
Shaft 28mm, black zinc Wider shaft, hardened chrome
Sleeve rotation 10 needle bearings Zero-whip design
Rating 210,000 PSI, 680kg 210,000 PSI, 680kg
Best for Cleans, snatches, jerks, general training Squat, bench, deadlift
Price $519 $519

The VERVE Elite Olympic Barbell is the one to put in every station. The 28mm shaft suits the hook grip used in Olympic lifts, and the needle bearings let the sleeves spin freely so the bar turns over fast in the catch. It is 2200mm long and handles squats and deadlifts too.

The VERVE Power Barbell is built from 42CrMo alloy steel with a wider shaft and a zero-whip design. It stays stiff under heavy squats and bench, which suits athletes chasing maximal strength. Add one or two once the Olympic bars are covered.

Posterior chain and accessory: the GHD

Hamstrings, glutes and lower back carry a lot of the load in sprinting, jumping and change of direction. The VERVE GHD Glute Ham Developer, Arnold Series at $2,699 works two ways: face down for glute ham raises, back extensions and hip extensions, or face up for core work. It weighs 110kg on a heavy duty oval steel frame and measures 1650mm by 1030mm by 1180mm.

The GHD is made to order, so if you are fitting out before a pre-season, order it early.

Power and plyometrics

Box jumps, step ups, depth drops and bounding progressions need boxes at more than one height. The VERVE 3 in 1 Wooden Plyo Box at $169 turns over to give 20, 24 and 30 inch heights, which is 508mm, 610mm and 762mm. One box covers beginners through to experienced jumpers.

For younger athletes or high volume jumping, the VERVE 3 in 1 Foam Plyo Box gives the same three heights in a soft shell that is more forgiving on a missed jump.

Conditioning

Athletes need conditioning that matches their sport: short repeated efforts, longer aerobic work and loaded pushing. Four pieces cover it.

  • VERVE Commercial Air Bike at $1,399 . Resistance rises with pace, so it suits all-out sprint intervals. It runs a Poly-V belt drive instead of a chain, the seat adjusts vertically and horizontally, and it measures 1400mm by 610mm by 1260mm.
  • VERVE Commercial Rower at $1,699 . A 10 level damper sets the drag and the monitor shows output. It is rated for users up to 150kg, runs on a stainless steel track and measures 2400mm long, so plan the floor space.
  • VERVE All Terrain Sled at $2,299 . Sled pushes and drags build acceleration and leg drive without the eccentric load of running, which makes them useful in-season.
  • VERVE Competition Powder Coated Kettlebells. Colour coded handles make weights easy to grab in a group session. Use them for swings, carries and finishers.

Flooring

Every surface athletes train on should be covered, not just the platforms. Kettlebells get set down, sleds need grip and boxes need a stable base. VERVE Rubber Gym Flooring, 15mm comes in 1m x 1m tiles at $55 per tile. They are currently on pre-order with an ETA of late October.

Because each tile is one square metre, counting is easy. A 10m x 8m room needs 10 x 8 = 80 tiles. Subtract any area under bolt-down platforms if you are not tiling beneath them.

How to size the number of lifting stations

Start with your largest group, not your average one. The station count has to work on the day the whole squad turns up.

Then decide how many athletes you want sharing each station. A common coaching setup is three: one lifting, one loading or spotting, one resting. Use whatever suits your program. Here is the arithmetic with that choice:

  • Everyone lifting at once: a squad of 16 divided by 3 per station is 16 ÷ 3 = 5.33, so round up to 6 stations.
  • Split session: put half the squad on the bar and half on conditioning. That is 8 lifters ÷ 3 per station = 2.67, so round up to 3 stations, with the other 8 athletes on bikes, rowers, sleds, boxes and the GHD, then swap.

The split session halves the number of racks, platforms and bars you need, but it requires enough conditioning gear to keep the other half busy.

Then check the floor. Using the bolt-on platform footprint of 2800mm by 2500mm, one station takes 2.8 x 2.5 = 7.0 square metres. Six stations take 6 x 7.0 = 42 square metres before walkways, and three stations take 3 x 7.0 = 21 square metres. Leave clear space behind each platform so a dropped bar never rolls into someone, and allow 2400mm of length for each rower.

Frequently asked questions

Should an athlete S&C gym use half racks or full power racks?

Half racks usually suit team training better because athletes can step in and out quickly and coaches can see every lifter. Full power racks suit heavy solo squatting where the lifter wants safeties on all four sides. Many facilities run mostly half racks with one full rack for heavier strength work.

Do I need a lifting platform if I already have rubber flooring?

If your athletes do cleans, snatches and jerks, yes. Olympic lifts end with the bar coming down to the floor, and a platform takes that impact and gives a flat, consistent surface for every rep. Rubber flooring still goes everywhere else in the room.

Which barbell should I buy first for athletes?

Start with the VERVE Elite Olympic Barbell in every station. Its 28mm shaft and 10 needle bearings suit Olympic lifts, and it handles squats and deadlifts too. Add the stiffer VERVE Power Barbell later for heavy squat, bench and deadlift work.

How many plyo boxes does an S&C gym need?

Work it out the same way as lifting stations, from how many athletes jump at once in your largest group. Each 3 in 1 box gives 20, 24 and 30 inch heights, so one box can serve athletes of different levels by turning it over. Foam boxes are a good addition for younger athletes or high volume sessions.

Should I buy an air bike or a rower first?

For most field and court athletes, the air bike is the better first buy because it suits short, all-out intervals and has a smaller footprint at 1400mm long. The rower adds full body aerobic work and needs 2400mm of length. A full performance centre has both, plus a sled.
