How to Build Your Own Gym Rig: Components Guide Australia (2026)

The Short Answer

A gym rig is built from three kinds of part: uprights (the vertical posts), the bars that join them (crossbeams and pull-up bars), and the attachments that hang off them (J-hooks, safeties, dip bars, landmines and more). VERVE rig uprights are 75 x 75mm, 3mm thick steel with Westside hole spacing, and come in 2.3m, 2.75m and 3.5m heights from $225 each. They also bolt onto a VERVE Zen Power Rack, Satori rack or 2023-onwards Commercial Half Rack, so you can start with a rack you already own and grow it into a rig. J-hooks and safeties are sold separately, so budget for them from day one.

Rig or rack: which do you need?

A power rack is a self-contained cage for one lifter. A rig is a run of uprights joined into bays, so several people can train at once and you can hang ropes, rings and bands from the crossbeams. Rigs suit commercial gyms, PT studios, school gyms and large garages. For a single lifter in a standard garage, a rack is usually the simpler buy; see our racks and rigs attachments guide for what fits each.

The VERVE system lets you do both. The uprights, crossbeams and attachments share one standard, so a rack you buy today can be extended into a rig later without replacing anything.

The components, and what each one costs

Uprights

Every VERVE rig upright is 75 x 75mm box section in 3mm steel, double powder coated, with laser-cut Westside holes. Pick the height to suit your ceiling, leaving room above the top bar for pull-ups and muscle-ups.

Upright Best for Price each
2.3m Garages and rooms with standard ceilings $225
2.75m Most commercial gyms and studios $255
3.5m High-ceiling spaces where ropes and rings hang from the top $265

Crossbeams and pull-up bars

Crossbeams are boxed 75 x 75 x 3mm steel with laser-cut holes along their length for bolting on accessories, hanging ropes and rings, and anchoring bands. Pull-up bars join uprights and give you a clear bar to hang from. Both include mounting hardware.

Part Length Notes Price
Crossbeam 510mm Short span, for depth between front and back uprights $89
Crossbeam 1080mm Standard bay width $129
Crossbeam 1800mm Wide bay, room for ropes or rings $239
Pull-up bar 510mm 28mm bar $59
Pull-up bar 1080mm 34mm bar, no knurling $119
Pull-up bar 1510mm 34mm bar $169
Pull-up bar 1800mm 28mm bar $199

Bar thickness is worth a look: the 510mm and 1800mm bars are 28mm, close to an Olympic barbell grip, while the 1080mm and 1510mm bars are a thicker 34mm, which is harder on grip.

Attachments

These attachments are listed on their product pages as fitting VERVE rig uprights. None of them come with the uprights.

Two ways to build

Extend a rack you already own

If you have a VERVE Zen Power Rack, Satori rack or 2023-onwards Commercial Half Rack, the cheapest way to a rig is to add to it. The Extension Kit for VERVE Power Racks ($599) adds two 2300mm uprights and four 520mm crossbeams with fasteners. It is designed for the Zen and also fits Satori racks and Commercial Half Racks that have the greater-than symbol laser cut on the uprights. Beyond that, add uprights and crossbeams one bay at a time.

Start a rig from scratch

For a new commercial floor, plan the number of bays first, then work out the parts list:

  1. Count the stations you need at peak time. One bay per one or two lifters is a sensible rule.
  2. Choose an upright height from your ceiling height, allowing headroom above the top bar.
  3. Choose bay widths. 1080mm suits a barbell station; 1800mm leaves room to hang ropes or rings.
  4. Add one pair of J-hooks and one pair of safeties per barbell station, then attachments.
  5. Decide freestanding or wall-mounted. How a rig is fixed to your floor or wall depends on the building, so send the VERVE team your floor plan before you order.

Buying mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting J-hooks and safeties. Uprights and bars alone will not hold a barbell. Price these in per station.
  • Mixing systems. VERVE's crossbeam pages note that other brands' 3 x 3 inch accessories may fit but are not guaranteed. Hole size and spacing vary between brands, so stay with one system or confirm the fit first.
  • Buying the tallest uprights by default. Measure the ceiling, then leave room for a head above the pull-up bar.
  • Skipping the plan. A rig is a long-term layout decision. Ten minutes on a floor plan saves a second order and a second delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What parts do I need to build a gym rig?
Uprights, crossbeams or pull-up bars to join them, and attachments. At minimum each barbell station needs a pair of J-hooks and a pair of safeties, which are sold separately from the uprights. VERVE rig uprights start at $225 each and crossbeams at $89.
Can I add rig parts to my existing power rack?
Yes, if it is a VERVE Zen Power Rack, Satori rack or 2023-onwards Commercial Half Rack. VERVE rig uprights are made to extend these racks, and the Extension Kit for VERVE Power Racks adds two uprights and four crossbeams in one box.
What height rig uprights should I buy?
Go by your ceiling. VERVE uprights come in 2.3m, 2.75m and 3.5m. Choose the tallest that still leaves room above the top bar for your head during pull-ups. The 2.3m suits most garages, 2.75m most commercial gyms, and 3.5m high-ceiling spaces with ropes or rings.
What is Westside hole spacing?
Holes spaced 25mm apart instead of the standard 50mm. The smaller gaps let you set J-hooks and safeties more precisely, which matters most for bench press. VERVE rig uprights have laser-cut Westside holes.
Will other brands' attachments fit VERVE rig uprights?
Sometimes, but it is not guaranteed. VERVE uprights are 75 x 75mm with 18mm holes. Other brands' 3 x 3 inch attachments may fit, but hole size and spacing vary, so check before you buy or stay within one system.
