HYROX Gear: What You Need to Train for HYROX in Australia (2026)

The Short Answer

A HYROX race is 8 x 1km runs with 8 stations, one after each run: ski erg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls. To train for it at home or in your gym you need a sled, a ski trainer, a rower, a pair of kettlebells, a sandbag and a wall ball, matched to the weights of the division you will race. The biggest single purchases are the sled and the two cardio machines; the rest is affordable. Kettlebells start at $25, sandbags at $59 and a commercial air rower is $1,099.

What a HYROX race involves

HYROX is a standardised fitness race: run 1km, complete one functional workout station, and repeat that eight times. Because the format and weights are standardised, you can train for the exact demands of race day. The stations and their standards, as published by HYROX:

Station Distance or reps Open (women / men) Pro (women / men)
1. Ski 1000m Bodyweight Bodyweight
2. Sled push 2 x 25m 102kg / 152kg, including the sled 152kg / 202kg, including the sled
3. Sled pull 2 x 25m 78kg / 103kg, including the sled 103kg / 153kg, including the sled
4. Burpee broad jumps 80m Bodyweight Bodyweight
5. Rowing 1000m Bodyweight Bodyweight
6. Farmers carry 200m 2 x 16kg / 2 x 24kg 2 x 24kg / 2 x 32kg
7. Sandbag lunges 100m 10kg / 20kg 20kg / 30kg
8. Wall balls 100 reps 4kg / 6kg 6kg / 9kg

Doubles and other divisions have their own standards. Check the current standards for your division on hyrox.com before you buy, because the weights are what you are buying for.

The equipment, station by station

Sled push and sled pull

The sled is the station that breaks most people, and the hardest one to train without the right kit. VERVE has three options in the sleds range:

  • VERVE Panther Sled: a 35kg plate-loaded sled with two detachable push poles, a single loading pin, 45 degree angled feet and attachment points on both sides for a rope, so it handles both the push and the pull. It is rated to an operating load of 150kg.
  • VERVE Competition Sled ($699, currently on pre-order): a 50kg plate-loaded sled with a wide competition-style base, a central loading post and four full-height knurled poles with hand-position markings, built for hybrid race training.
  • VERVE All Terrain Sled ($1,799): wheeled, with 8 stages of adjustable resistance and multiple handle heights, designed to be used on asphalt, concrete or indoor flooring without turf. It trains the same leg drive without plates, which suits gyms with no turf track, though it is not a like-for-like copy of a race sled.

HYROX's heaviest push is 202kg including the sled, above the Panther's 150kg rating, so Pro athletes training at race weight should talk to the VERVE team about which sled suits their loads.

Ski and row

Two of the eight stations are 1000m on a machine, so the ski trainer and rower are worth buying properly.

  • VERVE Ski Trainer: adjustable resistance with a display for distance, speed and calories. It comes with a wall bracket, and the floor stand is sold separately if you cannot mount it to a wall. See the ski trainer range.
  • VERVE Commercial Rower ($1,099): an air rower with a 10 level damper, a stainless steel track and a performance monitor, rated for users up to 150kg. It measures 2400mm long, so measure your space first. Our rowing machine guide compares the options.

Farmers carry

HYROX uses kettlebells for the farmers carry, so buy the pair you will race with: 16kg, 24kg or 32kg. The VERVE Classic Kettlebells (from $25) are cast in a single piece with a flat base and a matte powder coat that holds chalk, made to a 3% weight tolerance. The Competition Kettlebells (from $65) are the same size at every weight, so your grip and carry position stay the same as you go heavier. More detail in the kettlebell buying guide.

Sandbag lunges

VERVE Power Bags (from $59) come in 5kg steps from 5kg to 30kg, so the 10kg, 20kg and 30kg race weights are all available as fixed bags. They have multiple handles and colour-coded weights.

Wall balls

VERVE wall balls are soft-shell vinyl, 370mm across, and weighed in pounds. The closest matches to the HYROX standards are:

HYROX weight VERVE ball Actual weight Price
4kg 8lb wall ball 3.65kg $110
6kg 14lb wall ball 6.35kg $120
9kg 20lb wall ball 9.0kg $135

You also need something to throw at. The Double Wall Ball Target ($229) mounts on a VERVE rack or rig.

The running

Half the race is running. Outdoors is free; if you train indoors, the VERVE Curved Treadmill ($2,999) is motorless, so the belt speeds up when you push and slows when you ease off, which suits run intervals between stations. Read curved vs motorised treadmills before you choose.

What to buy first

  1. Kettlebells, a sandbag and a wall ball at your race weights. The cheapest stations to kit out, and you can train them anywhere.
  2. A sled. The station that most needs specific practice, especially the pull.
  3. A rower, then a ski trainer. If you can only fit one, the rower covers more general conditioning.
  4. A curved treadmill only if you cannot run outdoors or are kitting out a gym that runs HYROX classes.

Gyms running HYROX classes need multiples of each station. Browse the full HYROX gear range or send the VERVE team your floor plan for a station-by-station quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment do I need to train for HYROX?
A sled for the push and pull, a ski trainer, a rower, a pair of kettlebells for the farmers carry, a sandbag for the lunges and a wall ball with a target. Buy the weights for the division you will race: for Open men that is 2 x 24kg kettlebells, a 20kg sandbag and a 6kg wall ball.
How heavy is the HYROX sled push?
HYROX lists the sled push at 102kg for Open women, 152kg for Open men and Pro women, and 202kg for Pro men, all including the weight of the sled, over 2 x 25m.
What wall ball weight is used in HYROX?
4kg for Open women, 6kg for Open men and Pro women, and 9kg for Pro men, for 100 reps. VERVE's closest matches are the 8lb (3.65kg), 14lb (6.35kg) and 20lb (9.0kg) wall balls.
What kettlebells do I need for the HYROX farmers carry?
A pair at your division's weight: 2 x 16kg for Open women, 2 x 24kg for Open men and Pro women, and 2 x 32kg for Pro men, carried 200m. VERVE classic kettlebells start at $25 and run up to 40kg.
Can I train for HYROX at home?
Yes. Kettlebells, a sandbag, a wall ball and outdoor running cover half the race in a garage. A rower and a ski trainer cover the machine stations. The sled is the hardest to train at home because it needs a long flat surface; a wheeled resistance sled such as the VERVE All Terrain Sled works on concrete and asphalt.
