Best Gym Flooring Australia: Rubber, EPDM and Tiles (2026)
Best Gym Flooring Australia: Rubber, EPDM and Tiles (2026)
TL;DR
Gym flooring is one of the most underrated equipment decisions — get it wrong and you deal with shifting tiles, rubber smell, and cracking surfaces for years. In Australia, VERVE stocks three flooring types: standard rubber, EPDM synthetic rubber, and fire-rated rubber. Our recommendation for most setups is EPDM — it is easier to clean, more durable, and provides a more seamless look. All tiles are 1m x 1m, 15mm thick, and priced per tile (effectively per square metre).

EPDM vs Rubber: What Is the Difference?
This is the most important distinction in gym flooring, and most buyers do not know it exists.
Standard Rubber Flooring
Made from recycled rubber (typically ground-up tyres). It works. It protects your floor. But:
- Strong rubber smell when new (off-gassing can last weeks to months)
- Porous surface — absorbs sweat, spills, and cleaning products
- Can shift and separate at seams over time
- Slightly textured surface that traps dirt
EPDM Synthetic Rubber Flooring
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a synthetic rubber compound. It is the premium option:
- Significantly less odour than recycled rubber
- Non-porous surface — does not absorb moisture, easier to clean and sanitise
- More seamless fit between tiles — tighter tolerances
- Better UV resistance — will not degrade or discolour in sunlit areas
- More durable — longer lifespan under heavy use
- 10-year home warranty (vs 5 years for standard rubber)
For any gym that cares about hygiene, appearance, and longevity, EPDM is the clear choice.

How Much Flooring Do You Need?
Since each tile is 1m x 1m, the maths is simple:
- Single rack setup (home gym): 6-9 tiles (2m x 3m or 3m x 3m)
- Full home gym: 12-20 tiles (3m x 4m to 4m x 5m)
- PT studio: 30-50 tiles
- Commercial gym floor: 100+ tiles — contact VERVE for bulk pricing
Always order 5-10% extra to account for cuts around walls, pillars, and doorways.
Installation Tips
- Surface prep — the subfloor must be clean, dry, and level. Concrete is ideal. Sweep and vacuum before laying tiles.
- Adhesive — for permanent installations, use a polyurethane adhesive. For home gyms where you may move the flooring later, dry-laying (no adhesive) works on smooth concrete — the 13-14kg tile weight holds them in place.
- Edge trimming — cut tiles with a sharp utility knife and a straight edge. Score the rubber side, then snap along the score line.
- Expansion gaps — leave 2-3mm around walls to allow for thermal expansion, especially in non-climate-controlled spaces like garages.
- Direction — lay all tiles with the texture pattern running the same direction for a consistent look.
Flooring Warranty
| Product | Home | Commercial |
|---|---|---|
| EPDM | 10 Years | 3 Years |
| Rubber | 5 Years | None |
| Rubber Australian Made | 10 Years | 3 Years |
The warranty difference alone makes the case for EPDM in commercial environments — standard rubber carries zero commercial warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions
How thick should gym flooring be?
15mm is the standard for general gym use — weight training, machines, and bodyweight exercises. If you are doing heavy Olympic lifting with regular barbell drops, consider doubling up to 30mm (two layers) in the lifting area, or adding a dedicated lifting platform on top of the 15mm base.
Does rubber gym flooring smell?
Standard recycled rubber flooring has a noticeable odour when new that fades over weeks to months. EPDM flooring has significantly less odour due to the synthetic rubber compound. If smell sensitivity is a concern, choose EPDM.
Can I put gym flooring on carpet?
Not recommended. Carpet creates an unstable surface under heavy equipment, and trapped moisture between the carpet and rubber can cause mould. Ideally, install on bare concrete. If that is not possible, use a thin plywood or MDF subfloor over the carpet, then lay tiles on top.
Do I need fire-rated flooring?
Only if your local building or fire regulations require it. This is typically a commercial compliance requirement, not a home gym concern. Check with your council or building manager before fitout.
How do I clean gym flooring?
Sweep or vacuum regularly. Mop with warm water and a mild detergent. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners. EPDM flooring is non-porous and significantly easier to sanitise than standard rubber.
